The new iPad, and what it means for digital magazines.

Yiihaa! They finally released it: “The new iPad”.
I gotta say that, somewhere deep down, I was hoping for a little more tweaks and minor changes to the exterior.
However considering the comprehensive interior improvements, it is going to be a blast nonetheless when we get our hands on the new iPad and start testing our apps on it.
Naturally, the number one thing we’re really excited about is the new retina display, which we think will make a significant impact on our industry: both right now, and in the long run.
Magazines that are distributed as PDF’s will be much more readable, and even more enjoyable for users to consume. Not to mention the incredible speed boost the rendering will receive thanks to the far superior CPU.
One common topic of feedback our PDF-based digital magazines receive is that some articles can be hard to read without zooming, due to the font-sizes and styles being originally optimized for print – not digital screens, and their resolutions.
This has been one of the issues publishers have had with PDF-based publishing.
This problem will be as good as eliminated as more and more tablets with greater display densities transcend their previous-gen counterparts.
With this being a thing of the past, more and more publishers will make their content available on digital devices, and readers will have more and more content to explore.
So our guess is that the migration from print to digital – both for readers and publishers – will accelerate at an almost exponential rate, as readability and photo/video displaying (which is the absolute core of magazine consumption) will be even more enjoyable on the new iPad and other coming tablets with these high-res displays.
Now we’re looking forward to the “phablets”, with foldable displays for the next big step in the digital magazine industry…
